Subject: using a laptop drive in a desktop PC

I have been asked this.
A mate wants to put a 2.5" SATA 500Gb drive from a RS laptop into a PC. The cabling seems to fit, though securing the drive may be a problem (no cradle adaptor).
Anyone ever try this? Is there a power problem? Comments?
I gather he just wants to use the drive until he can afford another 3.5"
