You have to have at least one partition that is clear and un-encrypted to boot from. Making your boot partition small and separate can speed up booting a bit.

After you grow up and drop Windblows you can discover the joys of LVM (Logical Volume Management), kinda like a personal cloud. LVM lets you do things like hot swap drives or run a totally encrypted system.
