The forum software told me the limit. Once way back, I over-ran a 1000 character limit on one of the forums. Fluffer's size question made me curious so I made a humongously long nonsense string in notepad and repeatedly copied(CTRL-V is easy and lazy) it end to end into the message box, assuming that I'd once again be told the character limit if I overstuffed the box.
