Green Beret assigned to Springfield unit killed in Afghanistan

SPRINGFIELD - A National Guard major from New York with ties to Springfield died on Monday in Afghanistan from injuries caused by a roadside bomb, officials said.

Maj. Jeffrey R. Calero, 34, of Queens Village, N.Y., was killed while on combat patrol in the southern Afghan city of Kajaki, according to the Army Special Operations Command Public Affairs Office.

Calero, an Army Special Forces soldier, was assigned to the Massachusetts National Guard's Company C, 1st Battalion, 20th Special Forces Group, based in Springfield, said Adjutant General of Massachusetts, Maj. Gen. Joseph C. Carter.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Major Calero's family and with his fellow soldiers in Charlie Company," Carter said tonight from Milford. "We mourn the loss of this outstanding young officer."

According to Army public affairs, Calero was killed when he came upon an improvised explosive devise while clearing a route on foot during a combat reconnaissance patrol.

Born in Puerto Rico, Calero earned his commission as a second lieutenant in the Army after graduating in 1995 from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. He eventually earned the Green Beret.

He served six years active duty before joining the Army National Guard in 2001. He was posthumously promoted to major.

He is survived by his parents, Raymond and Roselle Calero of Queens, N.Y., as well as a brother and two sisters.

According to Department of Defense figures, a total of 387 U.S. soldiers have died in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Uzbekistan since the U.S. invasion in 2001 as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. Those numbers were last updated Oct. 27. It was Calero's second deployment to Afghanistan.

Calero had received a number of awards and decorations including the Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Infantryman Badge, Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, Ranger Tab and Special Forces Tab.
