There are a few things you need to address with Vista. Most have to do with ANY media player you use. You need to be sure all "reporting" and "get info from..." is turned off. Vista tattles on you, if you d'load music or movies, on the sly. If these are enabled, they talk to Microsh*t in the background, without permission or your knowledge. It is a hassle, but I also turn off codec updates and get whatever I need as I go along.
As for video card, you can get an economy 128mb card for cheap. The performance increase will amaze you. Currently, as much as 25% of your processor time is being taken by the mobo video process. Even if you don't play games, this is a great improvement that you will NOTICE! The simplest explanation of this is that mobo vid takes away the front end(do this FIRST) use of processor. The add-in card has its' own processor and memory, and uses ZERO front end resources. Add-in only takes the true vid output of mobo processor, and turns it into your end graphics. And, better cards allow for larger desktops and multiple monitors, or even using an s-video output to your digital tv.
The bottom line is that the less mobo resources you use, the more free your processor becomes. So it can get on with its true job....
