Well, I am very lucky to have no real complaints about my Dad. He was always there for me. No real complaints at all Pretty amazing guy. My mom is a lot more trouble than he ever was,but that's not because she wasn' a dedicated mom - maybe too dedicated. She's still really sharp, but the stress is wearing on her in her advanced age and it's pulling teeth( very independent) to get her to listen to things we do know better than her at this point. She's coming around some because she has to. I'm not in exactly great health - in 2010 was in the hospital 4 times in 8 mos with 3 major surgeries and a serious infection with the concurrent discovery of a major heart attack that I'd had probably 2 years before that. So my stamina is way down, esp. compared to what it was - I'd been seriously active for over 25 years before things went south on me Used to bicycle 80-100 miles a week or more - 4000 mi. in a year, up to 20 mi. /day. Thought it would be cool to bicycle through England, Scotland and Ireland. Not going to happen. I can make just 2 mi. at this point.
Need to picj it up.
Don't know what the deal is with my bro. While he was living and practicing in our hometown, he was great during several serious surgeries Dad had. Then after divorce and remarriage he moved some dist. away. Dad almost died 6 years ago, he never came. Kept up on tjhe phone. Visits a couple days over Xmas, that's it. Wouldn't be so bad if the folks weren't on the last leg of the journey. He is a relly good Dr., but also a workaholic.
I'm able to visit frequently, but can't move for several reasons. Family and a friend here that provide support and my awesome grandkids. I have good health insurance,HMO that's area based( one reason I can't move) and leaves me few co-payments even.
Moving from the story of my life, I'd say our health system and yours have some good points and some not so good. My care is a hybrid of government single payer and private insurance. The gov't pays my ins. a certain amount and I pay a certain amount, with little out of pocket beyond that. The ins co. manages my care -have go to network physicians, hospitals etc. In order to get gov't help for a nursing home, you have to be pretty destitute - sell your house and property, give them about every thing. On the other access to care is quick and easy for me - just need the first referral to a specialist, order for tests, admission to the hospital with no delay
I know you have gov't run Health, which to Americans means red tape, long lines and long waiting to see specialists. But it also means no fees. Do you have to pay any contribution? Would be nice to have facilities for extended stays.
If you want to reply( probably more briefly than me), you can reply here or to my addy above - welcome any time
