Return to The Land of Odd
-practices regarding oil extraction and the like, I look to Canada as North America's saving grace. Van is one of my favorite cities in the world, not by chance did the Dalai Lama and company choose it as locale for their world headquarters. Everything about the place, urban planning, rooftop gardening, architectural choices, certain neighborhoods--all this and more I return to time and again with a smile.
I've had the great, good fortune to mountain bike in midsummer at Whistler, kayak through the Broken Islands, and hike a good stretch of Vancouver Island's Pacific Coast--experience akin to stepping into a PBS wilderness special. Once, while camping on a beach, a pod of Orca came up to rub their bellies on massive boulders just off shore, Their sounds and frolic were like dogs playing, just happy to be alive on a good day to be a dog.
But Canada's infinitely more than wildlife and pristine wilderness. My most memorable times there are ordinary moments with ordinary people, affirmation, really, that despite intense efforts to self-destruct home and each other, there's hope for us yet.
