Outside the US the term "Yankee" may often have a different meaning then inside. Many non-americans even don't know what a Yankee really is. Here in Europe too, for many people that term is just used for a kind of "an example of an american".
And sorry if for many here in Europe, this actually means a synonym for what you explained before as "ugly". They don't know it better, nor they would care if they would know.
Certainly i don't know how it is in OZ, but perhaps it may explain a bit Dalek's reaction above : ).
