And at the ends of their lives, Carnegie and Rockefeller got into the philanthropist competition to see who could give away more money...by creating endowments to US universities, etc.
And the amounts were so massive that they still exist today.
JP Morgan bought out Carnegie's steel empire for $400 million way back then...worth over 300 billion in today's dollar.
