Last year I had occasion to extensively research options on a product. I can't say definitively if it was a coincidence or, my mind at the time was simply more attentive to a regularly advertised product, but I quite sharply began noticing more TV ads for products in the category of which I was Googling.
My ISP delivers TV, phone, and internet. I think it's very within technological capabilities to deliver TV ads based on one's internet searches. It's quite possible that one could be watching the same scheduled program as their neighbor, but both could also be watching different commercials during program breaks.
Again, how one views this business of tailoring content depends on who's consuming and who's delivering services; could be a good thing, could be a bad thing. Whether one is being manipulated or served is up to that particular individual. But it all does point to how closely, and easily we can be watched.
