The journals are remarkable reading. That “bb gun” was a state-of-the-art 50 caliber rifle powered by compressed air that could drop a bison at 100 yards. Indeed, a lot of the journal entries are about them meeting a Tribe, then using that Gun to cull game for for their hosts.

It’s also cool to note that most of the men were combat-hardened special forces veterans, with a few frontier men thrown in.

My favorite element in those journals is the careful observation and measurement of their remaining whiskey, which gets far, far more attention that Sacajawea’s minor drama. When it finally runs out in eastern Washington it’s a somber moment. When they finally get some more a year later on the return trip down the Missouri River, everyone’s so excited that Lewis spends four pages detailing the event.
