There is 3 different keys for the Umlaute on the German keyboard. Two of them are on the right of the k, whilst one is on the right of the p.
I wonder why they didn't design it in the same way as all the accents used in some languages, where you just type the accent and then the letter that comes underneath. They could have done that for the double dots, too, without wasting 3 keys!
Plus, we still have the ß on the key right to the 0.
