I'm sorry I'd thought you were trying to decide a course of action.
Oh yes, we're all guilty, that certainly is not unique to you. Most do it anonomously, with a blog, you can be identified. If the p/wd is the same as your blog name, its clear that you are the sharer and can be positively idenfied with sufficient certainty to satisfy a judge.
You did the right thing by complying.
You are right, in that he cant stop the sharing, although he has exerted sufficient influence for some sites to 'modd out' new Zskl links. Ultimately he cant stop everyone. His stuff will always have the 'currently available' status somewhere. The subject of establishing lost sales volumes through sharing is impossible. As you say, if they had to pay most would'nt, they only take it because it is free and so, in the event it fails to please - so what?
There were fundamental flaws in his approach. Exploiting those to minimise your 'damages' exposure would not be difficult and led me to conclude that he was 'sabre rattling' with no expectation of further action. I don't doubt he'd like to make a few examples and publicise those as a future deterrent, but another issue prevents him making this too prominent as he himself has a massive commercial weakness.
What little I know of him accords entirely with his conduct in this matter. But only you should gamble with your wallet, which was my concern.
